Phil Cosker discovered Henri Cartier Bresson when he was 17 and started taking photographs soon after – it took him some time to start making them; when he did it was Bresson who was his first influence.

Why ‘Snaps’? The OED variously defines ‘snap’ thus: a quick or sudden closing of the jaws or teeth (shutter) in biting … something worth securing or getting hold of; an odd chance; a good place or job … a scrap fragment or morsel … to utter sharp, tart, or cutting words … to make a quick and eager catch at a thing … to take instantaneous photographs …

A New EP by Anne Briggs

A New EP by Anne Briggs

The Anne Briggs - Four Songs EP has received very positive responses throughout the press. Last month Folk Radio UK published a lengthy new interview with Anne that focused on her early years as a travelling musician and the time around Four Songs. Earlier this week BBC Radio Four broadcast a wonderful half-hour interview with Anne - The Voices of Annie Briggs A further feature
is due to be published in the next issue of fROOTS.

Four Songs, as the title suggests, collects together four previously unreleased recordings - three BBC
recordings from the radio series ‘Folk-Song Cellar’, plus one song privately recorded by one of Anne’s oldest friends - on a beautifully presented vinyl 7" EP.

These rare, simple, unadorned and intimate performances, aching with poignancy, make their first appearance on record, fifty years after recording and capture Anne Briggs singing at just the right time in her brief singing career.

Anne herself has been very excited about the project: “…the results couldn't have been better. Nice the way it came about too, with lost recordings and old friends caring for them for decades.”
Track list: 1 The Recruited Collier, 2 My Bonny Boy (A Bower In My Breast), 3 Polly Vaughan, 4 The Verdant Braes Of Skreen.

EXHIBIT OPENING 1066: A Medieval Mosaic 13th August - 28th October @ St. Mary In the Castle

EXHIBIT OPENING 1066: A Medieval Mosaic 13th August - 28th October @ St. Mary In the Castle 10am - 5pm Entry by donation

1066: A Medieval Mosaic opens this Saturday in our Crypt Gallery.
Comprised of 3,000,000 pieces of spring steel the Medieval Mosaic holds the Guinness World Record as the largest steel mosaic. The artwork, measuring 64 metres in length and weighing 450 kg, is a complete re-creation of the Bayeux Tapestry and was created over 20 years by Michael Linton. In addition to the original scenes captured in the Bayeux Tapestry, father and daughter team Michael and Rachael Linton have combined their talents to create the untold stories of 1066. An 8 metre 'Finale' section, taking 5 years to research and complete, tells the story from the end of the Battle of Hastings to the crowning of William the Conqueror on Christmas Day 1066. The 22 metre insert, taking a further 8 years to complete, tells the story of the Battle of Fulford Gate and the Battle of Stamford Bridge which preceded the Battle of Hastings. This 33 year artistic odyssey has resulted in a truly unique masterpiece.

The exhibition will hang in our gallery until October 28th.
Entry is by donation.

Marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death slightly 'alternatively

Marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death slightly 'alternatively'

Sunday 21 May 8pm

THE COMPLETE DEATHS

You'll have to forgive us here at The Hall of Dreams because we absolutely cannot wait for this show to arrive - so much so, that we're banging on about it a month early! The show honours the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death in Spymonkey's own unique fashion... by performing all 74 of the bard's onstage deaths. 75 if you count the 'ill-favor'd fly' in Titus Andronicus. Spymonkey are a self confessed bunch of idiots; extremely talented idiots who happen to be tremendously funny and gifted in the clowning department. So you can expect them to perform each death sometimes lingeringly, sometimes messily, sometimes movingly, sometimes musically, but always hysterically.  Due to their often outrageous humour, smatterings of colourful language and the occasional bit of nudity, the show is not really advisable for anyone under the age of 14. But it comes heartily, verily nay hugely recommended to everyone else!
Tickets £16.00 from 01522 873894

SPRING STORIES AT LINCOLN DRILL HALL

The stories we're telling this spring...

SPRING STORIES AT LINCOLN DRILL HALL

Because you've attended similar events in the past we thought you might find our SPRING STORIES guide useful. It covers plays at Lincoln Drill Hall up to and including April. Why haven't we called it a 'play guide' then?  Well there are all sorts of different styles of plays but the common link they all share is that they tell a story, so we felt that might be the best way to link them together.

You can watch clips of most of the shows by clicking the pictures to get a sense of what the show will be like but we've also included a brief description of each one.

Our spacious bar is open from 1hr prior to a performance so you can come in and make yourself comfortable, plus you can pre-order your interval drinks to avoid the queues.  Parking can be found in any of the city's car parks, most of which are within a short walk from the venue, and there are disabled parking bays along Freeschool Lane and Saltergate. If there's anything you'd like to ask that we've not mentioned please don't hesitate to get in touch.

We look forward to welcoming you soon!

By the way, you can save up to £3 per ticket if you purchase our 'Spring Season Saver' events! Look for the badge on participating shows...
