Archaeology For The Frivolous

The Archaeology For The Frivolous The Collection Lincoln
9 Nov 2013 - 31 Dec 2013

David Kirshner's exhibition interprets the events surrounding a tram incident in St. Petersburg 1915 which has been lost in time.

Kirshner's work is usually a 'commentary' on an artist or period in art history. This usually encompasses the 18th century, the Baroque and Modernism. For this exhibition Kirshner will be focusing on St. Petersburg 1915. As revolutionary fervour reaches breaking point throughout Russia, a group of artists led by Kasimir Malevich and Natalia Goncharova mount an exhibition of their work at 73 Nevsky Prospect under the banner ‘The First Futurism Exhibition, Tramway V’.

The private view for this exhibition was a lively affair, incurring mostly negative comments from critics as the work displayed was futurist; a style which was still disregarded. The title to the show alone encouraged negative attitudes as there is no Tramway in St. Petersburg with that name. This however was the intent of the artists. After the private viewing there was an incident on a tram further along the boulevard. Possible victims and perpetrators have been lost in time, only Malevich’s two drawings survive of the incident.

Kirshner’s exhibition at the Courtyard gallery is both an interpretation and a frivolous commentary on a night when passions ran high, and political events scattered the protagonists around a Europe never to be the same again.
Kirshner uses a variety of media from wood and metal to printing and photography within his work.

Revolution In The Bedroom @ The Hub

NCCD first ever to celebrate golden age of British video game industry
Revolution in the Bedroom, War in the Playground: Video Gaming 1979-1989
19 Oct 2013 to 5 Jan 2014 at The Hub in Sleaford

Our brand new exhibition will be the first ever to celebrate and explore the rise of the British video games industry. "Revolution" takes a unique starting point - home based or "bedroom" programming. We highlight the importance of the hardware and the creativity of the early pioneers of video gaming and the industry's importance to the arts and creative industries.
You can even go hands on with some of the exhibits and get gaming!
We focus on the golden years of '79 to '89. The gaming art form pioneered during that time is finally being recognised as a genuinely new form of aesthetics and storytelling. These British games wove a rich and diverse 8-bit tapestry full of working class heroes, political satire, and infuriatingly complex puzzles, and the narrative devices and internal physics they pioneered still stand out as innovative and utterly ground-breaking.
Our curators have brought together objects which capture the achievements of the British bedroom programming generation, and the material and promotional artwork that articulates the rich and creative culture that grew around the industry. We have working models of the Sinclair ZX81, ZXSpectrum, Commodore 64, BBC Micro and the Amstrad, arcade games, video game titles, manuals, user guides and popular fanzines of the time such as CRASH.
Some of the most influential, iconic or ground-breaking British video games from the era, such as Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy are profiled - have a go at Atic Atac, Ant Attack, Manic Miner, The Hobbit and The Wild Bunch. Four newly commissioned films show a series of interviews with never-before seen footage, featuring significant games designers telling their stories directly.

Original artwork and reproductions by iconic designer Oliver Frey are included, and a new commission from Turner Prize nominee Simon Patterson, who is producing a major new wall-based work in the exhibition space, will add a highly contemporary view point to the exhibition. The exhibition closes with a profile of some of the current games designed from the bedroom.

Conversation by Raimi Gbadamosi and Kimathi Donkor @ The Collection, Lincoln 22 November

A talk with Raimi Gbadamosi, curator of 'What's Going On?' exhibition at the Usher Gallery and Kimathi Donkor one of the featured artists of the show on 22 November 2013.

Professor Raimi Gbadamosi is the second guest artist/curator to create a new hang of Lincolnshire's permanent collections in The Usher Gallery. By working with guest curators to change the displays on a regular basis we aim, in addition to bringing out rarely seen works, to encourage and challenge visitors to see and think about the collections in new ways. Raimi Gbadamosi's selection of works from Lincolnshire County Council’s collections is complemented by loans from other collections and from contemporary artists including works by Kimathi Donkor.

Raimi Gbadamosi is an artist, currently based in South Africa, whose work questions the origins of racial and cultural identity; he brings his own perspective to Lincolnshire’s distinctive collections.
In his paintings Kimathi Donkor explores political and social narratives about race, power and colonialism through the use of conventions in traditional western art.

What's Going On? Gallery tour with curator Raimi Gbadamosi will start at 11 am
The conversation by Raimi Gbadamosi and Kimathi Donkor will follow the schedule below:

WIFE: The Grey Ones @ Lincoln Drill Hall.

WIFE: The Grey Ones @ Lincoln Drill Hall Wednesday 23 Oct–Friday 25 Oct 2013

WIFE, A Trinity of Illusory Performance Makers, is a visceral theatrical experience born of three Los Angeles based artists, Jasmine Albuquerque, Kristen Leahy, and Nina McNeely. Her creations combine surrealist animations via projection mapping, sculpture, original music and costumes, using movement and dance as the vehicle for storytelling. WIFE harnesses old and new technology (magic) to illuminate mystical phenomena and archetypes that resonate throughout humankind’s collective unconscious.
Inspired by ancient myth, organic matter, decay, and transcendence, The Grey Ones explores the use of projection mapping on moving bodies and statuesque and saintly gestures to tell a story of the beginning of time.
The film will be running in the auditorium from 10am – 6pm
10 minute performances will be held at: 12pm, 3pm & 6pm

Lincolnshire Sings!

Lincolnshire Sings!

Putting community singing on the map in Lincolnshire

Community choirs and choral groups across Lincolnshire are invited to contribute to a mapping project which will enable opportunities for people to sing for fun to be identified and signposted.

Choral ensembles, glee and folk clubs, social singers, barbershop choruses and amateur operatic groups in addition to church, gospel and community choirs are all invited to join the ‘Lincolnshire Sings!’ register, which is being managed by soundLINCS on behalf of Lincolnshire Music Service. Participating organisations are simply asked to complete a short questionnaire: the mapping and dissemination of the information provided is then monitored by the soundLINCS team in accordance with the guidelines of the Data Protection Act.

‘We’re looking forward to hearing from hundreds of choirs from all over Lincolnshire!’ says soundLINCS CEO Nikki-Kate Heyes. ‘Their feedback will enable us to build a resource which will not only show how much singing goes on in our communities, but which may ultimately influence funding decisions, encourage new singers and help identify performance opportunities. It could even lead to choirs sharing their enthusiasm with others, whether by working with local schools or with other music-making groups.’

The initiative is an extension of the ‘Lincoln Sings’ project (see group Facebook page) which has already established that there are more open choirs than supermarkets in Lincoln city alone.

For more details on ‘Lincolnshire Sings!’ and a copy of the questionnaire, please e-mail jill@soundlincs.org
