Message From Public Campaign for the Arts

Last night, stories from the Public Campaign for the Arts were broadcast on BBC One. Videos recorded in support of our campaign were seen by millions in imagine... We'll Be Back?, a special programme charting the struggle to save the arts from the impacts of Covid-19

By joining together and sharing our experiences, we are making a real impact. We are showing how much art and culture matters to people across this country, and our message is being heard loud and clear.

Every person and every story makes our case stronger, and it's not too late to add your voice. Will you take 1 minute to share why the arts matter to you? You can use your phone or computer to send video, audio or text right now.

Tell your story now →

Hundreds of our arts buildings are still closed, 55,000 arts jobs have been lost since March (a decline of 30%) and too many people have fallen through the cracks of government support. It’s vital that we keep growing our campaign for the arts.      Will you invite your friends and family to join us too?

Share the Campaign →

Everything we do is funded by grassroots donations from supporters like you. If you can affordto make a donation now, you will be helping us reach a wider audience, connect policy makersto our work and support the construction of a people-powered manifesto for the arts

Peterborough Cathedral: Its History and
Imagery

Mon 15 Feb 2021 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM GMT

Online, Zoom

Ticket Link

DESCRIPTION

Peterborough Cathedral began life as an abbey church in the seventh century.                 This talk explains the development of the great building, and concentrates on                    the painted ceiling created from 1238, which has proven difficult to decipher.                      The speaker's recent monograph on the cathedral for the first time identifies                      the characters depicted on the ceiling and explores the background to its                   creation, heralding its status as the greatest political billboard of the English                 middle ages, and throwing new light on the aftermath of Magna Carta.

"See the whole thing is a world full of rucksack wanderers, Dharma Bums refusing to subscribe to the general demand that they consume production and therefore have to work for the privilege of consuming, all that crap they didn’t really want anyway such as refrigerators, TV sets, cars, at least new fancy cars, certain hair oils and deodorants and general junk you finally always see a week later in the garbage anyway, all of them imprisoned in a system of work, produce, consume, work, produce, consume, I see a vision of a great rucksack revolution thousands or even millions of young Americans wandering around with rucksacks, going up to mountains to pray, making children laugh and old men glad, making young girls happy and old girls happier, and all of ‘em Zen Lunatics who go about writing poems that happen to appear in their heads for no reason and also by being kind and also by strange unexpected acts keep giving visions of eternal freedom to everybody and to all living creatures.”

Edinburgh Festivals 'Optimistic' About Making a Comeback in Summer 2021

The Scotsman reports that Edinburgh's festivals have revealed they are pressing ahead with plans to return this summer - despite the cancellation of Glastonbury and huge doubts over whether restrictions on live events will be lifted by then.

Organisers of the city’s flagship events say they are “optimistic” they will be able to bounce back after they were all called off last April.

Council chiefs said they would be doing all they could to “support the sector and its recovery as safely and as quickly as possible.”

However it could be months before the scale and form of the city’s cultural extravaganza is known.

In recent years, the summer festivals have been worth more than £300 million for the economy.

The Tattoo has been selling tickets for this year’s show since October. Tickets for EIF shows normally go on sale in the spring, while the book festival usually launches its programme in June.

Fringe venues have been able to sell tickets as early as January in recent years, however the final programme is not normally launched until June.
